THE WALRUS SPEAKS

from sasha frere-jones...
This one is self-explanatory. Here’s the description included on the video’s YouTube page:
In 1969, a 14-year-old Beatle fanatic named Jerry Levitan, armed with a reel-to-reel tape deck, snuck into John Lennon’s hotel room in Toronto and convinced John to do an interview about peace. 38 years later, Jerry has produced a film about it. Using the original interview recording as the soundtrack, director Josh Raskin has woven a visual narrative which tenderly romances Lennon’s every word in a cascading flood of multipronged animation. Raskin marries the terrifyingly genius pen work of James Braithwaite with masterful digital illustration by Alex Kurina, resulting in a spell-binding vessel for Lennon’s boundless wit, and timeless message.
Lennon talks about his problems entering the United States and his general feelings about the economics of war. Levitan reports that some of his friends—Canadians!—don’t like the Beatles because they smoke marijuana and are “hippies.” Lennon suspects that “squares” are involved.

The animation is gorgeous, though not “terrifyingly genius.” And I recommend going to the YouTube page and clicking on “Watch in high quality.” via

Instant Karma

John Lennon would have turned 67 in 2007. If alive, he could well be at the forefront of bringing peace to Darfur, where more than half a million have died from violence and disease during four years of rebel discord. So to create awareness of the ongoing conflict, Amnesty International (with permission from Yoko Ono) has mined Lennon's solo work and rounded up nearly two dozen current artists to reinterpret the music, which spans the ex-Beatle's entire post-band catalog (plus a pair from while the Fab Four were still in business).

Release Date: June 2, 2007

Jackson Browne singing, "Oh, My Love" should be amazing. [cringe] who in the world says "Fab Four"? [/cringe]

Official site for the movie "The US vs John Lennon."

The US vs John Lennon tells the true story of the US Government's attempts to silence John Lennon, the beloved musician and iconic advocate for peace. Featuring extensive interviews with those who knew him best, this powerful new look at the life and times of John Lennon captures the mystique of the man, the ideals he fought for, and the price he paid for simply trying to make the world a better place.

The Back Story
The Lennon FBI files document an era when rock music seemed to have real political force, when youth culture, for perhaps the first time in American history, was mounting a serious challenge to the status quo in Washington, when President Nixon responded by mobilizing the FBI and the Immigration and Naturalization Service (INS) to silence the man from England who was singing "Give Peace a Chance".

Throughout fourteen years of FOIA litigation over the files, which began in 1983, the FBI maintained that its surveillance of Lennon was not an abuse of power but rather a legitimate law enforcement activity.

Great Lennon Info

Where were you when died? A friend called me and I recall explaining it to my young son. I lit a candle in the dining room and turned off all the lights and sat at the dining room table overlooking all the twinkling lights in the Gap Creek valley below. I picked up my 12-string and began playing 'Imagine', showing Xyon who Lennon was.

A couple of neighbors (Landon and Mott) came by with smiles and beers. My sister, Robin, was inconsolable because John had always been her favorite Beatle from the very beginning.

With thousands of people expected in New York to protest the convention, but hotels and hostels booking fast, why not organize a campout, from, say, Aug. 27 to Sept. 12, for 20,000 people in East River Park, with a "welcoming center" in Tompkins Square Park? Why not call it the Abbie Hoffman-John Lennon Camporee? Why not have bongos, yoga, massages, weddings (gay and otherwise), street theater and the like? Ahhh, Springtime in New York. [link]

Ready to kick Monday's ass?

Liberal Friendly & Unfriendly Places - See if your US city is listed. Asheville, NC, is listed with several references to it being a New Age Mecca. Sixty Minutes or someone did a story once proclaiming us as a best-kept secret/Gay-friendly, New Agey fru-fru kinda place. Which actually sums it up nicely.

Angels In America on HBO didn't disappoint. It was enormously entertaining. Part II is next Sunday. Did you notice who played the Rabbi at the funeral in the beginning? I didn't until they rolled the credits. Wow.

December 8 - Musical Events
1947 - Gregg Allman's Birthday
1943 - Jim Morrison's Birthday

John Lennon died on this day, December 8, 1980. A beautiful memorial to John Lennon can be found in the "Strawberry Fields" section of Central Park, in the shadow of his home in the Dakota building. The original Strawberry Field(s) in actually in the Liverpool area.

{quote for today}
"Life is what happens to you while you're busy making other plans."
"And in the end, the love you take is equal to the love you make..." (i think he wrote these words)

Good Morning... Is it Friday already?

Denver Fans Walk Out of Pearl Jam Show
Several concertgoers booed and shouted Tuesday night for Vedder to shut up as he told the crowd he was against the war and Bush. He impaled the mask during the encore of the band's opening show of a U.S. tour. During the show, Vedder said: "Just to clarify... we support the troops." I wonder if he'll do this at each of his shows on their latest tour now? Probably. And if you really came for the music, why walk out? Whatever gets you thru the night...

April 4, 2003 -- Robert Downey, Jr. turns 38 today

War Child CD
'WAR CHILD: HOPE' album - a fundraiser for children in Iraq. David Bowie, Paul McCartney, Travis, Spiritualized, Avril Lavigne, Moby, New Order, The Charlatans and George Michael are also amongst the stars who have contributed tracks to the 17-track record, set for release on April 21.

"Whatever the politics, whatever the rights and wrongs of war, children are always the innocent victims so I am delighted to be able to make this small contribution to a magnificent project that I hope goes a long way to alleviating some of the pain and suffering," said McCartney.

Yasuf Islam, '70s star Cat Stevens, has come out of self-enforced exile to redo his own hit 'Peace Train'. Avril will be covering "Knocking on Heaven's Door" by Bob Dylan. But, why her? I sure did love Cat Stevens' beautiful music.

Liv Tyler marries long time lover, Royston Langdon, after five years together. He is lead singer for the group 'Spacehog'. Her father is the legendary Steve Tyler, of the group 'Aerosmith'. Liv has also signed up to play 1950's pinup icon, Bettie Page. It may be some time for that as the script is still being written.

"Pink is very in." I just heard that on tv. Who says "in", anyway? My mother and her bridge club pals would say that. Is "pink" pepto bismol "IN"? 'Cause I think I'm gonna hurl.
