Tiffa Novoa 1975-2007 Costume Designer, Performance Artist. Tiffa was not just a fashion designer, she invented an entire aesthetic style. She was not just one of the founding members of a notorious performance troupe, she helped to create an entire subculture. She wasn’t just a visionary artist, she was a force of nature whose ripple effects inspired, and will continue to inspire, her closest friends and countless, thousands, of people who are likely not even aware that this is the woman responsible for their inspiration. El Circo [is credited] with creating the postapocalyptic fashions that many now associate with Burning Man. Most of the original El Circo fashions, which convey both tribalism and a sense of whimsy, were designed by member Tiffa Novoa, who has since hit it big with her Onda Designs. Tiffa Novoa, the legendary Bali based mind behind fine and exotic couture was teamed up with Evan Sugarman to form the now infamous fashion system, ERNTE Fashion Systems. via An Example of Her Work ![]() Labels: loss, performance_art, visionary_art Stumble It!

An Interview with Dayna McLeod Dayna McLeod is a Montréal-based performance artist and video maker… and she’s very funny. Winner of many prizes and awards, her work speaks to the masses with rare and powerful humour rooted in visionary feminist politics. It’s very likely that you’ve seen Dayna, but didn’t even know it: she embodies her message everywhere and in every way–from her infamous Santa Beaver to her newer (picture on the right) Monarchy Mama–her art travels far and wide. ![]() Monarchy Mama is an interactive, in-situ performance piece that pushes monarchial iconography beyond its limits of excess, gluttony, sexuality, and exploitation into the realm of absurd disgust. Entering the venue in a floor-length royal robe, I situate myself on a platform, stage, or pedestal that is easily accessible to the audience. Dramatically throwing the robe to the ground reveals a multi-mammaried body. Wearing a throat to crotch body suit made out of vinyl breasts, a regal Marie Antoinette wig, satin gloves, and royal jewels, my intention with this piece is to challenge an audiences' relationship to government, and the romance, sexualization, and fetishization of state and country. The audience will literally be able to "suckle at the teat of prosperity" as each breast is filled with vodka. Interview by Mél Hogan for ArtThreat | Via Before she says a word she's already demonstrated a feminist/political viewpoint. What a fabulously spirited performer! ![]() Extra Action Marching Band A 30 member musical performance group from Oakland/San Francisco recently left on a European tour leaving admirers and unwitting witnesses in their sequin-spewing wake. Manifesto: We, the EXTRA ACTION MARCHING BAND, shuffle, loiter, charge, and crawl around embracing our environment and quite frequently our audience. Defying categorization, this mutant lovechild of traditional peripatetic music and ecstatic turmoil consists of a hypnotic and driving drum section, a "smoking" horn line (w/a touch of sound effects), and is lead by a brutally sexy and provocative flag team. An Extra Action performance is a celebratory, transcendent spectacle that entices, amuses, arouses, and intoxicates the audience. Negativland's Mark Hosler (and Asheville area resident) talks about intellectual property, creativity and multimedia artViewed by some as artistic outlaws, Negativland are either the merry pranksters of music, or the monkey wrench gang of popular culture. For almost 30 years, the group has created striking political statements via media collages--initially in the realms of music and live performance, and now also in the area of visual art, video, books and radio--appropriating sounds, imagery and text from other sources. This sometimes got the group into hot water. Mark Hosler, de facto leader and spokesman for the group, visited Tucson this weekend with his multimedia lecture about Negativland and its activities. "Adventures in Illegal Art: Creative Media Resistance and Negativland," was Friday night, April 13. As the raw material for its singular art form, Negativland uses information and the ways of disseminating and manipulating information (media), the 45-year-old Hosler says in a telephone interview from his home outside Asheville, NC, where he had shared some of his artwork in February with the locals. link Labels: performance_art, radio, videos Stumble It!

Derailroaded: Inside The Mind Of Larry "Wild Man" Fischer is currently running on Sundance Channel. Josh Rubin's strangely fascinating documentary parses the life of outsider musician Larry "Wild Man" Fischer. Growing up in the '50s, Fischer was an undiagnosed manic-depressive schizophrenic who, after attacking his mother with a knife, landed in a mental asylum. Eventually he headed to California in the late '60s, where Frank Zappa discovered him singing his own strange compositions for a dime a song along Sunset Boulevard. In a strangulated growl somewhere between a possessed Tiny Tim and Bobcat Goldthwait, Fischer's music is something of an acquired taste. Zappa championed him and he led a convoluted career appearing on Rowan & Martin's Laugh-In and landing on the British Top 50 charts. Derailroaded is interspersed with plenty of talking heads delivering anecdotes, as well as footage of Fischer performing, but ultimately this is a film not about music or fame, but about the ravages of mental illness. Despite many moments of levity—such as a completely bizarre re-enactment of an interview between Dr. Demento and Frank Zappa, done with puppets—it's a devastating portrait of delusion and fathomless despair. You sure can see the Zappa influence but man, oh man, was the poor guy ever out there. link Labels: 60s, documentary, experimental music, films, Frank Zappa, music, performance_art Stumble It!

Marcel deJure, filmmaker, puppet master, and designer, was pleased when they resumed performing after a year-long hiatus. "It’s fun to be offensive and loud and vulgar and not make sense sometimes. I like freaking people out and making them laugh." He also makes unique and functional handbags that would be fun to carry, although I can see my kids rolling their eyes this very moment. Diamanda Galás: Defixiones, Orders from the Dead. A haunting work of mourning and catharsis, Galás commemorates victims of a long-forgotten Turkish ethnic cleansing. It premieres in New York City September 8 and 10, at 8pm, then begins a worldwide tour. Iconoclastic vocalist, pianist, composer, and performance artist Diamanda Galás, returns to New York to perform her most ambitious and compelling work to date. An operatic, sacred mass, “Defixiones, Orders from the Dead” is a sweeping work of historical memory that excavates the Armenian, Assyrian, Anatolian, and Pontic Greek genocides that occurred between 1914 and 1923. A 75-minute, highly theatrical spectacle scored for voice, piano and tape, Defixiones draws its name from the small lead charms engraved with curses and placed by relatives on graves throughout the Eastern Mediterranean to discourage desecration. Concerned with the poet/author living in exile-- away from their homeland or within it-- the work speaks for individuals who were treated and lived as outlaws, as Galás calls homosexuals,. Mostly composed by Galás herself, who drew from a wide range of sources, Defixiones is rooted in the rich musical worlds of the Byzantine and Ottoman Empires. Good Friday morning; a very welcome Friday. Robin is supposed to be released this afternoon after a 25-day hospital stay that began Dec 23rd. What a ride this has been for us all.
{regional} Second Annual Asheville Fringe Festival is taking place Friday, Jan 16, through Sunday, Jan 18, featuring Asheville's best performance artists, dance, theater, and other acts more Off-Broadway than Broadway. You can't swing a dead cat without hitting a performance artist in Asheville, so having the best of them at this festival makes it a "must see". Accidental Circus is appearing. And so are the Panty Raid Dames and Future of Tradition. {world} Women in a Saddam-ruled Iraq had more legal rights than the Coalition is now proposing. Collateral damage from war continues to trickle down. {blog site of the day} Farrago is a unique photo featured website from South Africa I like to visit. {film news} Sundance Film Festival will be showing "The Clearing", starring Robert Redford, Helen Mirren and Willem Dafoe which was shot here in Asheville, NC, in 2002. What we in Asheville would love to know is when will we all get to see it? Happy Birthday, Laurie! **Laurie is celebrating her birthday tomorrow, but since I already started wishing her a happy happy.... Go wish her well, all weekend long!
