Tiffa Novoa 1975-2007 Costume Designer, Performance Artist. Tiffa was not just a fashion designer, she invented an entire aesthetic style. She was not just one of the founding members of a notorious performance troupe, she helped to create an entire subculture. She wasn’t just a visionary artist, she was a force of nature whose ripple effects inspired, and will continue to inspire, her closest friends and countless, thousands, of people who are likely not even aware that this is the woman responsible for their inspiration. El Circo [is credited] with creating the postapocalyptic fashions that many now associate with Burning Man. Most of the original El Circo fashions, which convey both tribalism and a sense of whimsy, were designed by member Tiffa Novoa, who has since hit it big with her Onda Designs. Tiffa Novoa, the legendary Bali based mind behind fine and exotic couture was teamed up with Evan Sugarman to form the now infamous fashion system, ERNTE Fashion Systems. via An Example of Her Work ![]() Labels: loss, performance_art, visionary_art Stumble It!

An Interview with Dayna McLeod Dayna McLeod is a Montréal-based performance artist and video maker… and she’s very funny. Winner of many prizes and awards, her work speaks to the masses with rare and powerful humour rooted in visionary feminist politics. It’s very likely that you’ve seen Dayna, but didn’t even know it: she embodies her message everywhere and in every way–from her infamous Santa Beaver to her newer (picture on the right) Monarchy Mama–her art travels far and wide. ![]() Monarchy Mama is an interactive, in-situ performance piece that pushes monarchial iconography beyond its limits of excess, gluttony, sexuality, and exploitation into the realm of absurd disgust. Entering the venue in a floor-length royal robe, I situate myself on a platform, stage, or pedestal that is easily accessible to the audience. Dramatically throwing the robe to the ground reveals a multi-mammaried body. Wearing a throat to crotch body suit made out of vinyl breasts, a regal Marie Antoinette wig, satin gloves, and royal jewels, my intention with this piece is to challenge an audiences' relationship to government, and the romance, sexualization, and fetishization of state and country. The audience will literally be able to "suckle at the teat of prosperity" as each breast is filled with vodka. Interview by Mél Hogan for ArtThreat | Via Before she says a word she's already demonstrated a feminist/political viewpoint. What a fabulously spirited performer! The Asheville-based Applied Visualization Lab is premiering its climate and visualization expertise on the global stage at the 5th International Symposium on Digital Earth in Berkeley, CA, June 5 - 9, 2007. Digital Earth is a visionary concept for "spaceship Earth" sparked by R. Buckminster Fuller, grokked by the Apollo astronauts returning from their moon missions, and popularized by Vice President Al Gore. Inside the portable GeoDome™ (developed by The Elumenati from Asheville), Digital Earth attendees will experience a unique animation of the effects of weather, development and land use through the story of how a storm moves through Western North Carolina. Imagine sitting in dark domed room where a sky overhead suddenly reveals ominous thunderstorms forming. There's a steady sound of rain, and then thunder reverberates as lightning flashes all around you. This dramatic, engaging display sets the tone for the animated visualization, "Water in Western North Carolina." The story unfolds as audience members fly high over the Earth, learning about the qualities and importance of the water that covers two-thirds of the planet. The Elumenati's dome theaters, exhibits and installations are delightfully innovative with some of their clients including Hewlett-Packard, NASA, Disney, Burning Man, Circe de Solei. When the String Cheese Incident comes to town, it's usually an event. Sure, SCI fans would say that, but I'm talking about what often goes on when they come to your town. Years ago after playing an outdoor gig, they observed their fans staying behind cleaning up the venue. SCI soon began helping, too, by giving back to the communities that embraced them and most recently coordinated Fall 2006 Food Drives with Conscious Alliance. It's a great outfit comprised of visionary artists who made excellent posters, and musicians who raise money and donate their time to those in need. On the day of the show in Asheville (NC) last week, SCI and voluteers spent the afternoon cleaning up trash along the river banks. But for 2007 New Years, a gale of cultural forces will unite for two super freaky nights at the Sea Of Dreams event, that's put together by Anon Salon, Peak Experiences, (the new millenium's Bill Graham,) & Madison House in San Francisco. You can see from their previous events that this one is not to be missed if you are anywhere west of the Mississippi. String Cheese Incident along with other bands will be there and every element and orifice will be rocked for your entertainment pleasure. Labels: asheville, music, visionary_art Stumble It!

Being already established as a meeting point for the visionary community, now it will also become a reference on the East Coast for upbeat down tempo and neo media gatherings. This event is meant to uplift the awareness of collective consciousness through the multi-mediation of ego loss and ecstatic ritual process. Bringing together in celebration diverse communities committed to experience sacred sounds and images as pathways toward a return to a natural state of happiness. With a performance by ArcheDream, an archetypal mask theatre company which uses ritual, movement and myth to present allegorical dramas. The inspiration for ArcheDream is derived from ancient rituals where the Devine mingled with Humankind. Their theatre uses various forms of dance, innovative music, multimedia projections, archetypal masks and costumes that are illuminated with ultra-violet light, accentuating the supernatural aspects to reveal the dreamscape as the action unfolds. ArcheDream is founded on the quality of the individual artist participating in a collaborative effort. This remains their ongoing quest as they merge creative forces with the Reality Engine crew and the Chapel of Sacred Mirrors to " N'Light'N " through an original performance of ArcheDream, the Episode titled "5th Element." Sundance Film Festival - January 20 - 30, 2005
Just a few of the films I'd like to see next year. Strangers With Candy / Director: Paul Dinello; Screenwriters: Stephen Colbert (From The Daily Show), Paul Dinello, and Amy Sedaris. Absolultely LOVED the television series which was cancelled after three years, and can't wait for the movie. more » This Revolution - Director: Stephen Marshall is a topical story about Iraq and the relationships involving protesters, soldiers, photogs, and more. Synopsis and video can be found on GNN. What Is It? / Director & Writer: Crispin Hellion Glover. What Is It? is a bewildering, unnerving, surreal, blackly comic film from the visionary mind of Crispin Glover that tells the inner and outer struggles of a young man facing villains and demons on multiple planes. Fairuza Balk does a voice in the film. Reefer Madness (The Musical) / Director: Andy Fickman; Screenwriter: Dan Studney and Kevin Murphy. (A remake of the classic which has been a recent play and was released on DVD this year). We all know the story by now of how someone ends up at the house of evil, takes a hit from a funny cigarette and freaks out. more » America's Biggest Dick - Dramatic Shorts Category, Director: Bryan Boyce. Unable to find any info on this one, but if it's about somebody named Richard, I'm going to be ill. Sundance Festival Labels: films, Iraq, surrealism, videos, visionary_art Stumble It!

Some of you know about Stewart Brand's Clock Of The Long Now. If not, you may want to see what this visionary has been up to lately. Brian Eno recently released a cd of bells sounds he designed for the 10,000 Year Clock and profits will go to the Long Now Foundation. You can hear the cd here. Also initiated by the Long Now Foundation, The Rosetta Project is a global collaboration of language specialists and native speakers working to develop a contemporary counterpart of the historic Rosetta Stone.

Good Morning. I woke up to a dusting of snow this morning. It was expected, but my head was already wrapped up in Spring.
"Robert Crumb the visionary behind underground commix, is a reluctant hero of his generation." Good article. I have a lot of respect for Crumb. He's one of the very few who absolutely stayed true to his art and to himself. If you want to look at a superior collection of photographs, check out Getty Images. I believe some photos you can use and some are copywrited. Prize-winning photo-journalists have pics here, too. Back Off, Syria and Iran! MoDo puts the War Game in perspective. My husband is doing so well on his dietary changes since his diabetes diagnosis. I thought it'd be a much harder sell than it's been. Although we're still trying to come up with more good ideas for healthier low-fat, low sugar, low sodium meals. Guess I can search online for that. Warren Zevon's new studio album, which has the working title of "My Dirty Life and Times," is nearing completion and will be his final album, as he was diagnosed with inoperable lung cancer in August.. The singer-songwriter plans to add some more vocals over the next couple weeks. Tons of entertainers have made contributions to this album. Happy Birthday. Eric Clapton is 58 today.
"When I was drinking, I used to wonder if the bartenders were actually attractive or if it was their proximity to the Divine Elixir that made them attractive; nowadays I wonder if the counter-men at Sweet Inspirations are really cute, or if it is the exquisite pastry they give me that lends an extra aura of tastiness." This is just one of the reasons I enjoy reading Marlene Manners. She paints such lovely pictures with her words. **Edited @ 3:07 pm--I see where BlogShares is Number 1 on the Blogdex Hit Parade.
